Variety guide

What are Oblica and Bjelica?

Oblica is Croatia’s most widespread olive variety, found all along the Dalmatian coast and in Istria. It gives a round, fairly soft oil with pronounced fruit. Bjelica is an Istrian variety whose name comes from the Slavic word for “white”, after the pale colour of its olives before they are fully ripe; it brings structure and a firm bitterness.

Together, the two make an oil that is neither as bitter as a single-variety Buža nor as easy-going as a Leccino. A blend that exists in this form only in this vintage.

About the product

What small batch olive oil really means

The term is used a lot and rarely explained. Here it means this: the quantity is set by the trees that are ripe before the main harvest, and someone chooses those trees by hand, out in the grove. So there is no target volume to hit, only the volume that comes in. That has a practical downside worth saying plainly: this can’t become your everyday kitchen oil, because next year it won’t be the same. It’s an oil for tasting, comparing and giving, which is what makes it a good olive oil gift.

Why every vintage of olive oil is different

Olive oil is a product like wine, not like an industrial cooking oil. Rainfall, spring temperatures, harvest timing and the ripeness of the fruit change the result every year. Large brands smooth out these differences by blending so the taste stays the same. An estate that bottles a small batch does the opposite and lets the differences stand, which is exactly what sets this Croatian olive oil apart.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Oblica olive oil?

An oil made from Oblica, Croatia’s most widespread olive variety. It gives a round oil with pronounced fruit. In this vintage it is blended with the Istrian variety Bjelica, which adds structure and bitterness.

What makes the Special Edition different from the other oils?

It comes from a separate small pressing of trees that the owners select by hand before the main harvest. That’s why the blend changes from year to year and the quantity is limited.

Does olive oil taste different every year?

Yes, and that’s intentional. Rainfall, temperatures and harvest timing change the oil every year. Large brands even this out by blending; a small batch doesn’t.

What’s a nice olive oil to gift?

For a single gift, the Special Edition, because it has a story and is limited. If you’d like to give someone the comparison, choose the tasting set with all four varieties.

What does acidity mean in olive oil?

It measures the proportion of free fatty acids and shows how carefully the olives were harvested and how quickly they were pressed. Extra virgin olive oil may have up to 0.80%. This oil is at 0.09%, almost nine times below the limit.

What is the peroxide value of olive oil?

It shows how far oxidation has progressed. The limit is 20.0 mEq O₂/kg; this oil is at 2.6. Low values point to fresh, careful processing.

Is this olive oil cold extracted?

Yes. The term is legally defined and may only be used if the oil is obtained below 27 °C by centrifugation or percolation, without added heat that would alter the aromas.

What sizes is the oil available in?

Only in the 500 ml bottle.
