Mechanism

Why a ceramic mechanism for salt?

Salt attacks metal. Over time, salt mills with a steel mechanism can therefore corrode. Ceramic is very hard, doesn’t rust and doesn’t react with salt. That’s why a ceramic mechanism is the usual choice for a salt grinder.

This salt mill from Solana Nin combines a wooden body with a ceramic grinding mechanism. The grind is adjustable, from fine for the table to coarse for meat and roast vegetables. The grinder is supplied empty. It is best filled with coarse, dry sea salt.

Information about Wooden Salt Grinder with Ceramic Mechanism – Solana Nin

About the product

The Nin saltworks

The Nin saltworks lie in a shallow lagoon by the town of Nin, north of Zadar on the Dalmatian coast. Salt has been produced here since antiquity. After a break of several centuries, the saltworks resumed production in 1954 and still work the traditional way today: seawater evaporates in shallow pans, the sun and the bora wind from the Velebit mountains dry the salt, and it is harvested by hand.

Wood and ceramic: a salt grinder that won’t corrode

The wooden body sits comfortably in the hand and suits any table. Inside, a ceramic mechanism does the work. It is very hard, doesn’t rust and is therefore ideal for salt, which can attack metal over time.

The right salt for your salt mill

The grinder is supplied empty. It is best filled with coarse, dry sea salt, such as our coarse sea salt from the same saltworks in Nin. Fleur de sel doesn’t need a grinder: you sprinkle the fine crystals with your fingers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does the salt grinder come filled?

No, it is supplied empty. To go with it, we stock the coarse sea salt from Nin in a 500 g pack.

What salt do I put in a salt mill?

Coarse, dry salt, such as our coarse sea salt from Nin. Fleur de sel is too fine and too moist for a grinder and is sprinkled straight from the fingers.

Can you adjust the grind on this salt mill?

Yes. The ceramic mechanism adjusts from fine to coarse.

Ceramic or steel grinder: which is better for salt?

Salt can attack metal. Ceramic is hard, doesn’t rust and stays sharp. That makes it particularly well suited to salt.

Can a salt grinder be used for pepper?

In principle, yes: a ceramic mechanism also works for pepper and dry spices. If you want to grind salt and pepper separately, it’s best to use two grinders.

How do you clean a wooden salt grinder?

Only dry, for example with a brush or a dry cloth. Wood should not go in water or in the dishwasher.

Is a salt grinder a good gift?

Yes, especially together with the coarse sea salt and the fleur de sel from the same saltworks.
